Dazu Cave Sculptures: A complete guide to discovering the Dazu Caves, a World Heritage Site
Dazu Cave Sculptures: A complete guide to discovering the Dazu Caves, a World Heritage Site
If someone asks me what to see in Chongqing Besides its subway running through buildings and its futuristic "8D city" aesthetic, my answer is clear: Rock Sculptures of Dazu.
Located about 100 km from the city center, this sculptural ensemble instantly transports you from the noise of the metropolis to a silent universe of spirituality, art, and wonder. It is one of those places that you don't just visit, you truly feel.
What are the Dazu Rock Sculptures?

The Dazu Rock Carvings are located in the Dazu district of Chongqing, about 130 kilometers from the city center. They comprise a collection of religious sculptures carved into cliffs, dating from the late Tang and early Song dynasties. Buddhist representations predominate, although Confucian and Taoist imagery is also present.
These caves represent one of the highest levels reached by cave art between the 9th and 13th centuries. They are considered the last great peak in the history of cave art worldwide and are among the eight great caves of the world. Furthermore, they constitute the only site of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in Chongqing.
The Dazu Caves share prestige with the four great caves of China:
- Mogao Caves
- Yungang Grottoes
- Longmen Grottoes
- Maijishan Caves
In total, Dazu is home to 74 sites with over 50.000 religious sculptures carved in stone. Among them, five hills stand out: Beishan, Baodingshan, Nanshan, Shizhuanshan, and Shimenshan. In 1999, they were officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
For the average visitor, the most essential and representative areas are Baodingshan and Beishan. Baodingshan is the larger and better preserved, with reliefs that resemble authentic narrative sequences sculpted into the rock. Beishan, on the other hand, stands out for its elegance and delicate details, and is known as China's "Guanyin Sculpture Museum."
Must-sees you can't miss in Daza
The Guanyin of a Thousand Arms

It is the jewel of the place. With 1007 golden arms spread out like a fan, this sculpture is one of the most spectacular representations of Buddhism in the world.
Each hand holds a different object, each gesture has a meaning. Restored with gold leaf, it shimmers in natural light, creating an almost hypnotic scene.
The Reclining Buddha (Shakyamuni's Nirvana)

Measuring 31 meters long, this representation of Buddha's nirvana shows only half of the body, an artistic composition that leaves room for the imagination.
The face conveys absolute serenity. It is a work that impacts not through drama, but through emotional depth.
The Three Saints of Huayan

Three monumental figures lean slightly forward to avoid visual distortion. The tower supporting Manjushri has remained intact for centuries. The technical precision is astonishing.
The Wheel of Samsara

A huge relief depicting the cycle of reincarnation and the consequences of karma. The details in the faces and everyday scenes are incredibly expressive.
Pastoral Scenes (Shepherds and oxen)

Ten reliefs depicting the spiritual journey through rural scenes brimming with humanity. They are intimate, relatable, and surprisingly modern in their sensibility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Dazu Rock Sculptures
Is half a day enough to visit the Dazu Caves?
Is not sufficient.
If you're only visiting Baodingshan, half a day might be enough (about 2–3 hours). But if you also want to include Beishan, half a day is definitely not enough.
My recomendation is:
- If you have limited time, just visit Baodingshan and explore it at a leisurely pace.
- If you have a full day, combine Baodingshan and Beishan, as each has a different style and charm.
Is it worth hiring a guide? How can I do it affordably?
Yes, totally recommended.
Without explanation, the sculptures might seem like just a 500-meter walk without context. With a guide, everything makes sense.
Approximate official service rates (per session, not per person):
- 200 RMB
- 170 RMB
- 150 RMB
The guided museum tour is the same price. If you book the museum and sculpture area together, you can save around 40 RMB.
If you're traveling in a group, sharing the guide makes the price per person quite reasonable.
To save money, you can also follow the official "大足石刻" account, where they offer audio guides. You just need headphones.
Is transportation within the complex convenient? Do you have to take a tour vehicle?
Currently, the park area is larger than before and the route has been extended.
From the visitor center to the entrance of the site it is mandatory to take the shuttle bus:
- One way: 12 RMB
- Round trip: 22 RMB
Once at the top, you need to change to a tourist vehicle to get to the museum entrance.
Some experienced travelers recommend that if you're driving, you can look for "Dazu Rock Carvings Guantang Hotel" or "Baoding Police Station" to park closer and walk less.
How much do the tickets cost? Are there any discounts?
Approximate prices in high season:
- Baodingshan: 135 RMB (reduced price: 110 RMB)
- Beishan: 90 RMB (reduced price: 58 RMB)
- Combined ticket: 170 RMB
Discounts:
- Teachers with official accreditation: free entry to Baodingshan (presenting identity document).
- Seniors over 65 and children under 6: free admission.
- Students and people between 60 and 64 years old: reduced rate.
Is it possible to visit all five mountains in a single day?
Definitely not.
The five areas open to the public are: Baodingshan, Beishan, Nanshan, Shimenshan and Shizhuanshan.
However, Nanshan, Shimenshan, and Shizhuanshan are far from the city center, and transportation isn't very convenient. Ideally, you should dedicate two days to them.
For most travelers, visiting Baodingshan and Beishan in a single day is more than enough.
Personal advice
Take your time.
It's not a place to "check off the list." It's a place to pause before a small figure, observe the folds of a robe, and imagine the artisans carving stone 800 years ago.
The emotion here isn't a fleeting shock. It's a feeling that stays with you.
If you're planning a trip to Chongqing, set aside a day for Dazu. It's not just a day trip. It's a journey back a thousand years.
